Herman Burlingame 3rd crashed his plane in the Pettaconsett neighborhood in the big meadow down behind Granny Burlingame’s house (1077 Pontiac Ave) and the entire neighborhood showed up to survey the scene.

From Barbara Farina – Herman Burlingame and Fred Farina learned to fly together – around where Garden City is, near Sockanosset. Herman died with his wife and baby,  when the plane he was flying exploded in mid-air or crashed in Ohio after the war.

Herman’s father had acquired a lot of land and Herman made part of the empty land near Garden City into a small airport.

"The purpose of the creation of the Cranston Historical Society in 1949 was for reviving and maintaining a lively interest in the history of Cranston; to collect, store and on occasion exhibit books, papers photographs and other incunabula relative to early Cranston, to foster in the minds and hearts of Cranston residents and citizens an appreciation and respect for the founders of the city in which they live and work. To work toward the erection of a museum in which these objects of antiquity may be stored."
